Primary is pleased to present Slower, a solo exhibition of new works by London-based artist Neil Gall. Opening on September 14, 2024, this exhibition marks Gall's first solo with the gallery and will be on view through October 12, 2024.
We believe you will welcome such a remarkable balance—a head-on collision, the inner child crashing into the discipline of 20,000 days. Something here is familiar, afforded to us through Gall's figuration, a freedom firmly grounded in a personal evolution of abstraction.
Irreverent and reverential, Neil Gall's work may delay you. It might grab you and graciously insist that you stop for a multitude of views, an inspection at more extraordinary lengths. You know that material; you can feel it on your skin, that metallic taste on your tongue, the stuck of that which is sticky; Gall will undoubtedly tilt your head. You might even catch yourself whispering, No fucking way, cracking a smile.
"I have to slow down to make the work, so I hope the audience slows down to view it," Gall notes.
"Something to think about, that is the bigger theme, time and its absurdity."
Neil Gall explores the tension between structure and spontaneity. Known for his precision and attention to detail, Gall injects a rebellious energy into his work, challenging traditional notions of taste and form. Echoing sentiments of the fin de siècle, Gall invokes some radical new departures while offering a contemporary reflection on transition, time, and the balance of the human experience.
